The Grocer: Apple Cider Vinegar
Not to be confused with the carbonated beverage by a similar name (best known for quenching one’s thirst of a Friday afternoon), apple cider vinegar is an all-in-one remedy revered for its myriad health benefits.
Apple cider vinegar has long been prized in the health food world for being a multi-purpose tonic, with its list of benefits growing longer with new research. Rich in natural minerals, vitamins and enzymes, this cloudy liquid can bind to the toxins in your body to help eliminate them, which makes it a top-shelf detoxifying product.
On top of stimulating circulation, aiding digestion and assisting in cleansing the liver, apple cider vinegar is also touted as a weight-loss remedy by those who take small doses of the vinegar every day. By adding a little to water and sipping before meals, you can help alkalise your body, which means cooling any heartburn or indigestion you may be suffering. The ingredient is also said to ward off any common colds passing around throughout the year, and can be blended with hot water and honey for a quick-fix sore throat cure.
You don’t have to swallow apple cider vinegar to acquire its benefits – the liquid can also be applied to hair for shine and skin to assist with acne problems. By mixing apple cider vinegar and some filtered water, you can create a simple skin toner. Alternatively, apple cider vinegar can be used as a cleaning product for benchtop surfaces and even for washing fresh produce.
If the idea of sipping the somewhat full-bodied brew confronts your tastebuds at first, you can take baby steps and use it as an ingredient in baking, try it in caramels, create a jalapeño jam, add it to salads, make a delicious beverage, or roast some healthy snacks in it.
