The portly old girl standing guard on Wickham Street has had a makeover. She’s ditched the wheelbarrow and taken on a sleek new image, which was unveiled to the public this week. The new-look venue comprises four bars over two levels, with a rear courtyard worthy of summertime sun downers, and a cosy British lounge bar upstairs where the backpacker hostel once stood. The Elephant Hotel has maintained its live music bent, with gigs held throughout the week and regular Elephant Unplugged sessions inviting local talent to take the stage.

If you’re in the mood for a tipple, head upstairs to The Master Room where an 11-metre bar and snug leather couches await. Around the corner you’ll find a breezy deck overlooking the renovated courtyard, or get amongst the action on the ground level where street artist Sofles has worked his spray paint magic. The new outdoor kitchen serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, with a bespoke woodfired pizza oven and charcoal rotisserie churning out gourmet pub grub like pulled duck burgers with red ‘slaw and smoked barbecue sauce, as well as lighter options like quinoa and grilled asparagus salad.
