The Charming Squire brewhouse opens in South Bank
Get acquainted with the brewing process at new craft beer bar and brewery, The Charming Squire.
James Squire was indeed a charming man. The loveable rogue arrived on our shores with the First Fleet as a convict, soon winning over his peers and not only fathering 11 children but also becoming a governor’s guard and earning the esteemed title of the colony’s first brewer. The rascal has now played the role of muse for highly anticipated new brewhouse, The Charming Squire, which opened on Grey Street in South Bank last week. Featuring high ceilings, an industrial open-plan design and an on-site brewery, the craft beer venue is fit for the man himself. Beer brand James Squire currently operates six brew venues around the country, with this first dip into Queensland being the largest of the line-up. The Charming Squire is the result of a collaboration with one of Brisbane’s longest running independent hospitality companies Mantle Group and treats thirsty guests to the full James Squire beer and cider range, imported bottled beer and one unique beer brewed on-site that will only ever be available at the South Bank venue.
A purpose-built brewery works its magic upstairs with direct lines leading down to the main copper bar and keg room on the ground level. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls invite guests to keep a steady – or perhaps not so steady – eye on the entire process, from brewing to bar. Grab a seat in the fresh air outside or settle into the restaurant, and take your pick of the 22 beer and cider taps, and two wine taps. Executive chef Deniz Coskun has crafted a kicker of a menu, with a coal and woodfire spit roast bringing the goods. Lunch and dinner dishes complement the brews on offer, with share plates like smoked crispy duck, mini lamb doner kebabs and beef croquettes soothing beer-induced belly rumbles. For a heartier feed, pierce a fork into slow-cooked Kimberley Red beef, pure-bred Berkshire pork, Garrison’s Farm dorper lamb or beef short ribs in a smoky whisky barbecue sauce. James Squire beer-battered fish and chips, spiced lamb burgers and hot smoked salmon salad round out the list, as well as sweet offerings like fresh caramel waffles and farmhouse cheeses with fruit bread. The venue also houses the Brewer’s Store deli at the South Brisbane Train Station end of the building, with breakfast, lunch and coffee on offer seven days.
