The Banana Lounge, West End

Vegan hub The Banana Lounge opens in West End

A new cafe has opened in West End catering to both vegan and raw diets. The Banana Lounge has taken over the space where The Realm Cafe used to sit on Boundary Street, pouring coffee with vegan-friendly milks and guaranteeing a meal or sweet treat made in an animal-free environment.

Owner Amanda Benham has been a vegan for 30 years and formerly worked as a dietician. Combining these two passions, Amanda is now sharing her knowledge with the denizens of West End. The Banana Lounge sees breakfast runs until 2:00 pm and there’s an all-day menu featuring burgers, burritos and fajitas as well.

The Organic Tofu Scramble on toasted organic sourdough or turkish bread keeps breakfast simple, while The Lot (scrambled tofu, sausage, vege-bacon, beans, mushrooms, tomato and spinach on sourdough) sees something for everyone – especially those partial to tastes a little ‘beefier’. The menu also contains raw options, with raw carrot cake or chocolate cake tempting morning tea, while the raw, dehydrated banana crepes come with cashew cream that’s sweetened with dates, fresh fruit and a mango and berry coulis.

Muffins, brownies, tarts and banana bread are all homemade on-site, as is the cafe’s own chai mix of freshly ground spices. The Elixir coffee is an organic, single-origin blend from Peru, which can be accompanied by your choice of soy, skinny soy, almond, oat or rice milk. Smoothies and fresh juices also feature, while a dinner sitting will be added soon.
