Stray Dog, Woolloongabba

Brown Dog Cafe becomes Stray Dog bar

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but this local cafe is squashing that notion under an ice-cold tinny of Brooklyn Lager.

All hail the good ol’ Aussie tinny. While the very sight of a can of Carlton Draught may take you back to lazy summer afternoons watching your dad flip snags on the barbecue, Brown Dog Cafe has taken things up a notch and revitalised the art of tinny-sipping with the opening of its new late-night bar, Stray Dog. The Woolloongabba favourite took a well-deserved break over Christmas, reopening the doors this month with the news that it was extending trading hours on weekend evenings.

At 4:00 pm every Friday and Saturday afternoon, the cafe cabinets roll away into hiding and the tinnies take the floor, offering a changing selection of beers and ciders for thirsty patrons. Current offerings include the likes of Mountain Goat, Pistonhead, John Smith’s and Brooklyn Lager, as well as tallies from Stowford Press Cider and a small selection of wine and spirits. The night-time food menu is designed for grazing, with one new main featured each week and an assortment of snacks like cheese platters, spicy meat sticks and bowls brimming with pretzels or Cheezels. Team your tinny with a pulled pork roll or frikadellan burger nestled on a polenta bun, and kick back at your new favourite local.
