Climb aboard Steam Train Espresso in Red Hill

With a name like Steam Train Espresso, you may be conjuring up images of a large, noisy space – much like the presence of a steam train. But Red Hill’s newest resident is quite the opposite, a quaint hole-in-the-wall cafe where you can sit back in the shade and admire the leafy Arthur Terrace surrounds.

From the moment you step inside Steam Train Espresso, you’ll immediately feel welcome. Owner Dane has certainly made the most of the cosy space, crafting most of the furniture himself to create an inviting place for locals to enjoy a cup of joe or healthy meal. Take a seat outside on the astroturf, or perch upon a stool at the timber bar inside, taking in the delicious scent of freshly brewed coffee. If time is not on your side that’s fine too – you can text ahead your order and Dane will have it ready when you get there. Fonzie Abbott Espresso is the coffee on offer, or choose from a selection of ice-cold frappes, cold-pressed and flavoured coffees and Parkers Organic Juices. Steam Train also whips up fresh smoothies, from healthy lean-and-green options to more decadent berry-filled delights, which can all be made with or without dairy.

For breakfast on the run, nosh on an ultra-satisfying bacon, egg and avocado roll, or opt for a healthy acai bowl topped with fresh fruit. Steam Train also makes its own probiotic chia pods, with honey, cacao, chia, yoghurt and berries, prepared lovingly each afternoon to be ready for hungry morning tummies the next day. Come lunchtime, look to the cabinet filled with freshly made wraps and organic baguettes, filled with the likes of ham, lettuce, tomato, cheese and relish, or haloumi, tzatziki and cucumber. If gluten is not your friend, fear not, you can choose from a range of gluten-free treats including brownies and salads.
