Clayfield welcomes coffee royalty Queen of Pops

When coffee meets ice, some amazing things happen. But iced coffees and affogatos are just the beginning … it is time to treat your tastebuds to a coffee popsicle. Clayfield’s newest monarch is ready to change the way you consume your espresso shot, and she goes by the name Queen of Pops.

Queen of Pops is the newest project from Peter and Penny Wolff, the clever couple behind Hendra’s Dandelion and Driftwood and Wolff Coffee Roasters. The quirky cafe has taken over a sunny corner in Clayfield, framed by a white picket fenced courtyard and black-and-white striped awnings. Queen of Pops’ fit-out features regal-looking copper touches, from the Wolff nitrogen-infused cold-brew coffee taps to the coffee machine details and serving baskets, and the building is finished perfectly with a neon crown on top.

With Dandelion and Driftwood turning five this year, Peter and Penny have been discussing the idea of a second cafe concept for quite some time. Looking to focus on specialty coffee with a twist, the couple embarked on months of extensive iced-confectionery research, travelling to Brazil to attend workshops and understand the art of true popsicle making. The process was carefully considered, with the first rounds of popsicles being trialled and tasted at Dandelion and Driftwood until they perfected them. The end result was the Queen of Pops Crown Jewels – six popsicle flavours that offer an authentic coffee experience. With cafe latte, cappuccino, long black, hot mocha, hot chocolate and chai latte, the pops replicate an in-cup experience – just frozen. Each of the coffee pops feature hand-crafted double ristretto shots, the hot chocolate is made from single-origin cacao beans and the chai is created from a blend of tea and spices, with not an artificial flavour in sight. Pops are served on their own or in a ‘popoggato’, and kids can indulge in pop sodas – similar to an ice-cream spider but with a vanilla, chocolate or banana pop instead.

In addition to pops and beverages, Queen of Pops serves up a simple selection of royally named bites to pair with your selection, such as the King Bagel with bacon, free-range egg, melted tasty cheddar, tomato relish and rocket, or the Princess Ring blueberry bagel with house-made raspberry cream cheese. You’ll also find a range of sweet treats and pastries sitting pretty on the counter, all of which you can grab and go, or take out to the astroturfed courtyard to enjoy.
