Pavement Whispers: Vol 16 March 24

From whispers of new espresso bars to Italian trattorias, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

The Spaghetti House Trattoria
If you’ve been craving an authentic Italian hit since The Spaghetti House Trattoria on Boundary Street closed its doors in January, you’ll be mighty pleased to hear the icon will be reopening tomorrow, Wednesday March 25. Under the guidance of brand-new owner Claire Parviz in a new location in South Bank, the Italian restaurant will continue to offer home-style fare like figs and gorgonzola, Italian meatballs and spaghetti marinara, and a stellar wine list. Find the new venue dishing up lunch, dinner and Venetian-style tapas in a laidback setting on Grey Street.

Billykart Kitchen
Celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue has revealed plans for a sister cafe to his award-winning spot, Billykart Kitchen. The Annerley cafe – which took out numerous categories in our 2014 EAT/drink Awards – is one of the most popular spots in Brisbane and now foodies can rejoice with the knowledge that another Billykart eatery is due to open in West End in August. The new venue will open for dinner seven nights a week in addition to breakfast and lunch service and will include a deli and bottleshop on-site. The address is still a secret but keep watch on The Weekend Edition for updates.

Locavore Café
Woolloongabba locals can look forward to a new addition to the area, with Locavore Café set to open its doors in mid April. Living up to the cafe’s moniker, owner Nathan Olsson will be sourcing the best local, ethical and sustainable produce from within a 160-km radius, including fruit and vegetables from Salisbury’s Food Connect, Marvell Street Coffee from Byron Bay and Echo Valley Farm eggs from Goomburra. Locavore Café will be open seven days, serving up house-made breakfast, lunch, coffee and treats.

Workshop 14
Friday March 20 saw the opening of craft beer, wine and spirits bar Workshop 14 in Hamilton. The industrial-themed venue serves up a neat selection of grub including pizzas, arancini balls and spring rolls, while thirsty visitors can enjoy draught beer from Bacchus Brewing and Stone & Wood as well as an impressive selection of wines and classic cocktails. The venue’s outside seating also encourages patrons to soak up the atmosphere of the harbour precinct. Look out on The Weekend Edition for more details soon.

Macchiato Me
A new espresso bar is on the horizon for Ashgrove. Macchiato Me is getting ready to open its doors on Monday April 27, tucked in next to Boran Remedial Massage on Wardell Street. The specialty coffee bar is working with Dramanti Artisan Roastery on a custom blend called Fleetwood, but will also serve rotating single origins via espresso, filter and cold-drip coffees. The streamlined menu will feature locally sourced produce, with treats including apple crumble and banoffee pie dessert jars, and freshly baked goods from neighbouring Queen of Cakes.

Marché du Macaron
Willpower is futile in the face of the macaron, so we suggest exercising caution when traipsing past the new headquarters of Marché du Macaron. The premium handmade treasures first launched in Brisbane in 2011 but now they’ve found a permanent home in Gordon Park, with the retailer busting open the doors on Thistle Street this week. Those craving flavours like salted caramel or peanut butter who aren’t able to get to the store quick enough can still place their orders online or by phone and have their bounty of goodness delivered the next day. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition next week for a full feature.
