Pavement Whispers: Vol 29 June 30

From whispers of meat and whisky dinners to teppanyaki joints, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Queen of Pops
It’s a rather special day when you can take your coffee hit in the form of a popsicle. That’s exactly what the team behind new venue Queen of Pops plans to do when the cafe swings open its doors on Friday July 3. After months of testing and a trial run at Dandelion and Driftwood, Penny and Peter Wolff – the masterminds behind Brisbane’s Wolff Coffee Roasters – will be releasing their specialty coffee popsicles in a dedicated space in Clayfield. Choose from flavours like latte, cappuccino, long black, hot chocolate, hot mocha and chai latte, or opt for a cup of cold brew nitro coffee or tea on tap. Of course traditionalists will also be able to choose from a range of blends to fill their cup and team it with a signature gingerbread cookie or two.

Saiko Teppanyaki
The Emporium is gearing up to welcome Saiko Teppanyaki as the Japanese eatery takes over half of the space formerly occupied by Wagamama in early August. Saiko Teppanyaki will be cooking up familiar dishes in a centralised kitchen viewable from the dining area, where chefs will dice and grill your meal on specialised hot plates. Patrons will be able to enjoy meals featuring top-quality meat such as wagyu beef, lamb and chicken as well as prawn and snapper variations. The restaurant is taking a relaxed approach to the traditional teppanyaki bar, turning the space into a Brooklyn-styled venue with a cocktail list and Asahi and Stone & Wood beers available on tap. Lunch specials will be available as well as happy hour specials every Friday.

Bakery Lane festivities
This coming weekend celebrates the Story Bridge’s 75th birthday and Bakery Lane is going to be joining in on the festivities. Friday July 3 will see kiosk. host an afternoon of Sandwiches & Ciders from 3:00–6:00 pm, serving up crispy pork belly, apple and fennel slaw, cucumber pickle and Swiss cheese sandwiches with Somersby ciders. On Saturday July 4, Bakery Lane’s foodie spots will join together to host a ticketed banquet beneath the stars from 7:00 pm, with entrees from Lost Boys, mains, sides and drinks from kiosk. and desserts by I Heart Brownies. To wrap it up, kiosk. and Lost Boys will be throwing a Sunday barbecue from 11:00 am, complete with gourmet hot dogs, vegetarian treats and live DJs.

Harajuku Gyoza
The combination of hot, gourmet dumplings and cold Japanese beer is hard to resist – and it seems the good folk of Brisbane agree, with Harajuku Gyoza set to open a new restaurant in the CBD on Friday July 10, in addition to existing locations in South Bank, Indooroopilly and Fortitude Valley. Tucked inside Albert Lane, just off Queen Street, the new eatery will be dishing lunch and dinner from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm every day. The menu will be the same as at other Brisbane locations, with an interesting ceiling feature to gawk at while throwing back your dumplings of choice.

Meat Meets Whisky Dinner
South Bank’s Che Asado & Bar has partnered with Cobbler in West End to bring together the things each respective venue does best – meat and whisky. On Thursday July 16, the venues will host Meat Meets Whisky, an intimate evening showcasing a collection of premium meats paired with a unique selection of whisky. Hosted by Cobbler owner Martin Lange and Che Asado’s head chef Simon Geiling, the evening will feature three courses of Argentinian-inspired meat dishes, five rare whisky tastings, house beer and wine. Find more information on the Che Asado Facebook page.

Phase 4
Another store is set to open in Bakery Lane this week, with Phase 4 setting up shop on Saturday July 4. The store will specialise in vintage furniture and second-hand records, with thousands of titles ranging across decades and genres, and a range of mid-century furnishings including chairs, coffee tables and lamps. Phase 4 will open in conjunction with the Bakery Lane Providore Markets from 9:00 am on Saturday and will host a grand opening party in the courtyard from 5:00 pm. Check The Weekend Edition at 10:00 am this Thursday for a closer look at the store and its stock.
