Pavement Whispers: Vol 08 January 27

From whispers of new bars to nourishing breakfasts, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Speedwell
Food entrepreneur Damian Griffiths is at it again. While we sit patiently waiting for Doughnut Time to open, Damian is already looking ahead to his next exciting venture – Australia’s first permanent inner-city winery, Speedwell. The massive precinct will encompass three sites in Fortitude Valley on Little Street, fronting on to Wickham Street. Speedwell will include an urban winery that will make wine on-site, as well as an Argentinian asado restaurant on the second floor, and a tropical alfresco bar on the rooftop. The precinct is also tipped to house a new 24-hour eatery called Bubbles Diner in a separate building, as well as an Asian street-food venue and a potential food-truck hub. Speedwell is set to open by the end of this year – we’ll be sure to keep you posted with updates!

The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen
Racecourse Road is soon to welcome a new drinking den, with The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen set to open mid-February. The boutique bar will focus on craft beers (including its own in-house brew), a wide selection of whisky and a tapas-style bar menu. The Stables will also open for weekend breakfasts and is looking to roast its own coffee, the perfect pitstop after you’ve gathered your Eagle Farm Markets haul. Look out on The Weekend Edition for full details in the coming weeks.

5 Boroughs
Proving that the old adage ‘you can never have too much of a good thing’ still rings true, Marisa and Todd Clayton are gearing up to launch 5 Boroughs, a New York-inspired street-food and burger venue set to open on Logan Road in Stones Corner. The Claytons have partnered up with former Spirit House head chef Kelly Lord to curate a menu of hearty burgers, sandwiches, tacos and just about everything else you can find among the five boroughs of New York City. Expect this new piece of American-inspired cuisine to open in March, with more venues to come later in the year.

Harajuku Gyoza
If you’ve been fortunate enough to enter the Harajuku Gyoza house of hot dumplings and cold Kirin, no doubt your tastebuds will twitch with joy over the news that the Japanese eatery is set to open yet another venue in Brisbane – this time on Grey Street in South Bank. The new restaurant will join fellow Harajuku eateries in Fortitude Valley, Indooroopilly and Sydney, and is expected to open in April.

Press’d
If you ventured to the Commercial Road Antiques over the weekend for a smoothie from Press’d you might have been disappointed to realise that the purveyor of grab-and-go health food is no longer there. Never fear, Press’d hasn’t closed, it has merely moved 40 m down the road to a larger space of its own at 53 Commercial Road, Newstead. With the extra room comes an expanded food and drink menu, alongside the usual favourites such as organic Cold Press’d juices and Toby’s Estate coffee.

Botanica
Health-conscious takeaway nook Botanica has been treating hungry bellies to gluten-free treats and wholesome salads since 2013 – and this month it’s entered a new era with the addition of a permanent breakfast offering. Operating from a sweet shopfront in Red Hill, owners Ali and Brett Hutley are serving brekkie from 6:00–9:00 am Tuesday through to Friday, with four delicious daily options such as coconut quinoa porridge, berry and apple crumble, fresh fruit salad or raspberry cashew cream. Botanica’s salads will continue to be served from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
