Pavement Whispers: Vol 09 February 3
From whispers of rooftop bars to guilt-free desserts, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Eagles Nest Brisbane
Perched atop The Point Brisbane, positioned in a perfect part of Kangaroo Point, a new rooftop bar is undergoing the final flourishes before it opens in just a few weeks. Kicking open the doors and inviting local sippers up from 4:00 pm on Sunday February 15, Eagles Nest Brisbane boasts incredible views spanning Brisbane River and the city skyline. The venue has partnered with Moët & Chandon to offer Moët Ice Impérial – the first champagne designed to be served on ice – as well as the usual drops and a live band every Sunday afternoon.
Chermside Kung-Fusion Night Market
Chinese New Year is just around the corner and to celebrate Westfield Chermside will be hosting a month of activities and displays across the centre from Friday February 6. On Friday February 20, the centre will be holding a special one-off event, the Kung-Fusion Night Market, which will boast lion dancers, live music, Asian market stalls and a fireworks display. The festivities will also see a giant 15-metre dragon installation strung above the Woolworths Food Court, as well as lantern-making workshops, palm readings and a pet-treat store.
Affinity Restaurant
What was once known as Simpatico is set to evolve into Affinity Restaurant mid-February. Nestled on 2 Latrobe Terrace in Paddington, the licensed 60-seat restaurant will dish up a seasonal modern-Australian menu with a home-style bent and well-chosen tipples to match. Simpatico closed its doors in October last year, new owners Grant Greskie and Tash Douglas were handed the keys in January and are planning to open the new venue on Wednesday February 18.
Cocowhip
If you think dairy-free soft serve sounds like an oxymoron, think again. Woolloongabba’s famed home of nutritious and delicious nibbles, Pawpaw Cafe, has collaborated with the Gold Coast’s BSKT Cafe to offer treat-craving health geeks Cocowhip. Made from natural coconut water and coco probiotic, this guilt-free dessert is 99% fat free, vegan-friendly, has no added sugar, contains less than 90 calories per serve and is free from gluten, dairy, lactose, soy and artificial additives. Pop in to Pawpaw for a weekly changing breakfast bowl featuring tasty additions like caramelised buckinis, fresh fruit and shredded coconut, or take a sneak peek at the beauty on Facebook.
Le Bon Choix
The mouth-watering delicacies prepared at Le Bon Choix are some of the most desired treats in Brisbane and until now you could only sample the Parisian-inspired goods at three locations across Brisbane. Le Bon Choix has just opened a new boulangerie and patisserie on Edward Street in Brisbane City, serving a sumptuous range of eclairs, tarts, macarons and pastries to inner-city sugar seekers. Make sure you also keep an eye out for the group’s largest project yet – a new 100-seater Le Bon Choix due to open in Westfield Garden City in the coming months.
The Grove Bar
Even the most studious individual needs a place to unwind and The Grove Bar has long been the first destination for Kelvin Grove QUT students looking to blow off steam. The bar has recently undergone extensive renovations, rejuvenating the space for Kelvin Grove students to see some live music, play a game of pool and enjoy a post-exam beverage. The Grove will reopen by the end of the month, just in time for the first semester of 2015.
