Pavement Whispers: Vol 20 April 28

From whispers of night noodle markets to roaming doughnut vans, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Night Noodle Markets
The Brisbane Times Good Food Month has been announced for another year, which includes the ever-popular Night Noodle Markets. Last year’s inaugural event attracted more than 170,000 visitors, which has led to an expansion on the event for 2015. The Night Noodle Markets this year will be held over 12 nights from July 22 to August 2 at the South Bank Cultural Forecourt, with extended opening hours on weekends. Look out on The Weekend Edition for more information closer to the event.

Dendy Coorparoo
Around this time last year, The Weekend Edition covered the plans to redevelop Coorparoo’s old Myer building on the corner of Old Cleveland and Cavendish Roads. Official plans for the soon-to-be-developed Coorparoo Square are now being revealed, with Dendy Cinemas Coorparoo Square announced for a December 2016 opening. The new complex will feature seven standard screens and three Dendy Premium Lounge screens, complete with luxury recliner seating and pre-film dining and bar facilities.

The Doughnut Bar
The folks behind Brisbane dessert van Chocolate Komberry Co. have now turned their focus from the cronut back to its delicious origin, the doughnut. The Doughnut Bar is the latest food truck to hit Brisbane’s streets, bringing handcrafted doughnuts to drooling mouths via a converted Kombi. The artisan gems have been made from premium ingredients, hand-dipped in pure melted chocolate or a cream-based glaze, and naturally flavoured.

NOLA
Portside Wharf is getting set to welcome a New Orleans-style restaurant to its ranks in mid-2015. NOLA (an acronym for New Orleans Louisiana) is a new venture from Miles Graham who owns the Brother Espresso cafe group as well as The Crosstown Eating House in Woolloongabba. NOLA will offer a menu of Cajun-influenced meals with lashings of French Quarter style. Po’boys, popcorn shrimp, jambalaya pork three ways, grits and bread pudding with whisky butter sauce will be available, all prepped under the watchful eye of chef Brooke Quietzsch.

Red Hill Farmers Markets
The team responsible for the farmers markets at Carseldine, Nundah, Kuraby and Fortitude Valley is adding another location to its growing empire, with the launch of the Red Hill Farmers Markets on Fulcher Road on Sunday May 31. Word is spreading that not only will we see some of Brisbane’s favourite vendors selling goods but also some unique stalls that are not yet seen at other markets. Kids will be able to enjoy horse rides and jumping castles, while parents can take in some live entertainment and taste tests at on-site demonstrations. The Red Hill Farmers Markets will take place every Sunday morning from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a wide selection of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to craft goods.

Cambridge Lane
Manly cutie Cambridge Lane Espresso has celebrated its first birthday with some big changes. After closing for renovations over Easter, the cafe is up and running once again – now boasting additional seating for its loyal regulars after expanding into the shop next door. The venue is also in the process of acquiring a liquor licence and will open for night-time trading by late July.
