Shining bright on a street corner in Bulimba, the homely fit-out and comforting aromas drifting from the open windows of Ooh Mami are sure to kickstart a few pangs of nostalgia. Serving lunch and dinner seven days, the canteen will dish up the kind of nosh a well-meaning mother would feed her brood – wholesome, nutritious meals made from scratch. Whether you want to nibble away in the small, light-filled space or snaffle your treasures to the hungry bellies waiting at home, Ooh Mami’s well-balanced menu will provide. The three brothers behind the venture were inspired by their mother’s classic approach to cooking and married her food philosophies to the skills of chef Chris MacColl to create a collection of guilt-free dishes perfect for mid-week takeaway.

A range of hearty vegan salads will fill the Ooh Mami cabinet, meandering from quinoa and pumpkin with Danish fetta, to red cabbage and avocado with raspberry dressing, plus the option of adding meats like harissa chicken, pulled lamb, beef brisket or smoked salmon. The gourmet sandwich line-up will ensure lunchtime cravings are sated, with staff crafting hunger-busters from fresh produce and slow-cooked meats. Bookend your choice of filling with gluten-free bread, rustic pug malt loaf or Ooh Mami’s custom-made salty pretzel loaf. Rounding out the all-day menu is the square meal section, which ticks off all cravings with southwestern slow-braised beef, Memphis slaw, steak-cut chips and chipotle sauce; Moroccan spiced lamb with chickpea, sweet potato and basil pesto salad; and lemon and herb salmon with potato salad, asparagus and creamy dill sauce. Little bellies are taken care of with a children’s menu, while sharing plates, soups and sides fill the gaps. Wash your nutritious nibbles down with a Nudie coconut water, Byron Bay organic tea or Benchmark coldpress coffee.
