Adopt an Italian olive tree with Nudo

While you might be able to fit a fledging potted olive tree on your inner-city balcony to harvest a couple of the green pods for marinating, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to produce your own olive oil, irrespective of your best intentions on your journey to self-sufficiency. However, a collection of olive groves in the east of Italy and Sicily are here to help.

Nudo is a family-run cooperative of olive growers that dot the hilltop villages in the Marche region. Run by husband and wife team Jason Gibb and Cathy Rogers, Nudo operates an adopt an olive tree scheme, allowing lovers of the vibrant oil to rent a tree in Italy and reap the rewards of its sumptuous liquid gold. Soon-to-be plant parents can choose a specific olive variety from the 12 grove options, and follow the progress of the tree for the yearlong adoption – perhaps even popping by the grove to visit, hug and water your tree should you find yourself in the motherland.

The local farmers tend to your adopted tree and harvest the olives, before shipping a striking tin of oil to your door. The tins are made from recycled materials, and Nudo practises organic farming and ensures it sets aside a portion of the farms for forest to offset the company’s carbon emissions. Each farm is unique, occasionally cohabiting with rolling vineyards or fields of fruit trees like apricots, figs and pears, altering the taste of each grove’s harvest. From Rosalio expect peppery, grassy notes with a hint of lemon in the oil, while Natali produces a delicate, slighty sweet and fruity molten and Barone Pastore’s crop hints at fresh-cut grass, artichoke and tomatoes.

Browse the Nudo website for stories about the farmers and location details or to discover the providore range. Nudo also runs a Darjeeling tea garden adoption program as well.
