Next Door Kitchen & Bar opens at South Bank

The latest venture from the folk behind Ahmet’s Turkish Restaurant and Olé has opened its doors, the new space drawing inspiration from the allure speakeasies and forbidden mischief. Next Door Kitchen & Bar is perched along the Little Stanley Street dining strip at South Bank, sitting squarely between its two cousins, Ahmet’s and Olé.

For this new epicurean outfit, head chef Dean Brewer has devised a menu that draws on 1920s flavourings and focuses on shared dining. On the menu, Beetroot & Blue Cheese Arancini meet Crushed Wagyu Meat Balls with provolone and sticky onion jam, while the Cured Ocean Trout with iced fennel salad, burnt orange vinaigrette and fried potato crisps could be paired equally well to the Truffle Parmesan Fries.

The succinct wine list sports drops from Australia, New Zealand and Europe, while old-style cocktails nod to the Roaring Twenties. Divided into three volumes, the Moonshine and Marketplace cocktails see housemade ingredients and seasonal produce come together in refreshing styles like the Pineapple and Basil Fizz with Kettle One vodka and soda. The Bootleggers and Baptists volume places twists on classics, while the House Made Hooch is a one-litre hooch bottle for the table to share, appearing in three concoctions including the Jersey City Fish House Punch of dark rum, lemon juice, ginger ale, cloudy apple juice and Stones Green Ginger Wine.

A space for relaxed afternoon drinks accompanied by flavoursome foodstuffs, or a dimly lit roughish evening of indulgence, Next Door Kitchen & Bar will woo your every food whim amongst a sleek black, charcoal and copper interior.
