Marco Agostini, Phil Brown, Jason Davis, Lumir Bodlak, Stuart Smith are a group of friends and Sandgate locals that took the plunge in late 2015 and opened up Mr Henderson on Brighton Road. United by the thought of opening a bar that brought a little bit of inner-city chic to the bay, the group took over the cosy space and set about turning it into a welcoming spot for group catch ups or intimate get-togethers. Mr Henderson has been designed with the area’s history in mind, referencing the building’s past life as Henderson’s Boot Repair and later on Henderson’s Toys. The team took time and care to unearth the building’s original features such as high ceilings at the entrance and exposed brick walls, while adding a custom-built bar, unique light fixtures, comfortable furniture, a beer garden in the rear, local artwork and vintage touches to create a handcrafted-style atmosphere – as boutique as a pair of Henderson’s boots.

Mr Henderson stocks a comprehensive range of boutique beer, wine and spirits – providing something for everyone while offering the opportunity to branch out of one’s comfort zone. The bar boasts seven tap beers from local breweries and international brands, as well as a hefty selection of bottled varieties from further abroad. Wines have been sourced from South Australia, New Zealand and France, while spirits are obtained from smaller distilleries. Mr Henderson welcomes BYO food, with plenty of eateries nearby to chose from and food trucks stopping by on any given night for those looking to chow down on sublime street food. Mr Henderson is a bar that offers a welcoming community vibe, helping to make Sandgate a great spot for locals to enjoy a night out without trekking into the City or Valley.
