Mi + Mian brings Asian delights to Bakery Lane
Imagine sinking your teeth into the crispy exterior of a traditional Chinese huo shao pie, discovering a doughy centre bursting with a flavourful chicken and snow-pea filling. That is just a taste of the selection you’ll find at Bakery Lane newcomer, Mi + Mian.
Mi + Mian comes from the clever family behind Fat Dumpling on Boundary Street. Led by matriarch Janet Cao, the family decided it wanted to expand its offering in Brisbane and share with its customers another side of traditional Chinese cuisine. From there, Mi + Mian – which translates to rice + noodles (or flour) – was born. Securing a spot in the ever-growing Bakery Lane, the hole-in-the-wall eatery offers breezy outdoor seating as well as takeaway options. The fit-out is simple, and seeing Janet work away in the open kitchen just adds to the culinary journey you are about to embark on.
The ever-changing menu at Mi + Mian is based on family recipes from the Chinese province where Janet and her husband grew up, Qingdao. Everything is made on-site, and the meals have a warm, homestyle feel. Particularly specific to the Northern Chinese region is the lu bao (pan-fried pork buns), huo shao (handmade flatbread pies) and rice bowls with options such as braised pork belly and Mum’s Crispy Chicken served with steamed rice. You’ll also find slurp-worthy noodle soups, giant spring rolls and rotating Shandong salads.
