Maker is the newest project from Jerome Batten, sitting around the corner from its sibling venue Gauge on Fish Lane in South Brisbane. Much like Gauge and Jerome’s Teneriffe venue Sourced Grocer, Maker has a strong focus on seasonal local produce and showcases a variety of Australian beer, wine and spirits alongside high-end international selections. Jerome has once again paired up with Matt Eagle of ME Architect to design the intimate space, this time bringing a moody and masculine aesthetic through the use of burnt ash timber panelling, custom-glazed porcelain lights, raw-steel inset shelves and an impressive single-sheet 7.5 m-long oxidised brass bar.

Behind the bar, Edward Quatermass has devised a creative yet restrained menu, illustrating his respect for the ingredients that he uses. Every single detail has been considered, from the carefully curated produce to the hand-chipped clear ice spheres that float inside impressive artisan glassware. To add to the bespoke experience, Edward and his team have taken it upon themselves to create their own liqueurs and cocktail additions, after a failed search to find products that used local and native ingredients. Pairing this with well-executed cocktail techniques, the guys are able to create unique sensory experiences that are a feast for the eyes, nose and mouth. In addition to the ever-changing seasonal cocktail menu, you can also order classics with a twist – think nitrogen-chilled martinis and negronis with house-infused vermouth.
