Bowen Hills welcomes Locos Kitchen & Bar

Malt cookies. Chocolate ganache. Hazelnut coffee ice-cream. Whipped Kahlua cream. Roast hazelnuts. Chocolate shavings. Have we got your attention yet? Bowen Hills has a new joint ready to satisfy all of your belly’s desires, and it goes by the name of Locos Kitchen & Bar.

Locos Kitchen & Bar is the latest Bowen Hills project from Chris McBride, who previously owned neighbouring cafe Bowen Arrow. Seeing a lack of food options in the local area, Chris decided it was time to take the matter into his own hands, creating a space that celebrates all of his favourite things – eating, drinking and music. The eatery has an industrial feel, with polished concrete floors, exposed piping and recycled-timber finishes, contrasted by cushy red booth seating and a floor-to-ceiling graffiti mural, created by local artists Drapl. The broad bar boasts eight taps featuring cider, ginger beer and six rotating seasonal craft beers, with 4 Pines, Newstead Brewing Co. and Fortitude Brewing all currently on offer.

Chris has teamed up once again with chef Daniel Forbes, who started out with him at Bowen Arrow. The heroes of the menu are burgers, ranging from the Perfect Burger – a beef patty with melted camembert, Serrano ham, cos, tomato, pickle and cherry chipotle – to the Mother Nature, with a sweet potato and black bean patty, lettuce, tomato, pickled green chilli and sweet onion. Little bites include thick-cut steak fries with barbecue pulled pork, blue cheese sauce and scallions, and you can also nosh on a selection of fresh salads or crispy fried chicken. Come evening, a paleo a la carte selection gets added to the menu, with the likes of twice-cooked pork belly with spiced apple cider puree and asado-grilled flank steak with chimichurri butter. If you can make room for dessert (who are we kidding, there is always room for dessert), sink your teeth into a moreish hazelnut coffee ice-cream sandwich, or a watermelon-elderflower granita with drunken strawberries, lime zest sherbet, mint, black pepper and flowers.
