Local Mobile Deli handcrafts classic sandwiches
The humble sanga has been given a gourmet twist courtesy of the newest food truck to join Brisbane’s fleet, Local Mobile Deli.
It may look like a miniature cottage fit for a fairytale, but the 1980s Local Mobile Deli trailer is dishing up the kind of fodder that could make a grown man weak at the knees. The two gents behind the business – musician Dominiqe Bird and his mate Sam Davis – took inspiration from the food-truck culture of the US to dream up their assemblage of classic handmade sandwiches stuffed with cured meats and fermented trimmings. The Local Mobile Deli goods are a far cry from the soggy sangas of your youth – these beauties are made fresh using homemade dressings and premium seasonal ingredients. Wrap your paws around Carolina, stacked with chopped pork and an apple and cabbage slaw, Rick Reuben full of pastrami, sauerkraut, cheese and Russian dressing, or the Kim Cheese option boasting housemade kim chi and a lashing of cheese.
The menu will be tweaked to suit the season, with a different special on offer each week. If last week’s launch special of 12-hour smoked brisket with housemade Sailor Jerry barbecue sauce was anything to go by, we’re expecting drool-worthy offerings. Respect for ingredients and a focus on cooking from scratch will see the boys’ own interpretations on dressings and sauces mingling with housemade accompaniments and their own pickles and ferments. The current winter menu harbours a leaning towards American-style chow, but don’t expect them to stick within those boundaries over the coming months. The mobile deli had already worked up a buzz before its official launch outside The End last Friday, with a follow-up appearance planned for the next Food Truck PheNomNomNom event at Wandering Cooks from 5:00–9:00 pm on Thursday July 17. Follow the trailer on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on its whereabouts.
