West End now boasts an authentic Japanese-style bar that serves an extensive range of traditional Japanese meals and drinks to accompany.

Masami Mathias has had many years experience in hospitality, running a number of sushi train establishments in Brisbane’s bay area. After coming across a recently vacated space on Boundary Street in West End, Masami jumped at the opportunity to showcase traditional Japanese hospitality by transforming the spot into an authentic, informal Japanese-style drinking establishment – otherwise known as an izakaya. With a stylishly simple interior, adorned with retro Japanese posters and decorations, Izakaya Goku is a venue that attempts to offer traditional food and traditional hospitality with a modern twist.

Izakaya Goku serves up a menu of shareable meals and stocks a great range of Japanese beverages to enjoy. Patrons can choose from a reasonably priced menu of sushi, sashimi, okonomiyaki, dumplings and many more bite-sized eats. All sushi and sashimi dishes are made using Australian fish, and many other ingredients are sourced locally. Thirsty punters can sample Japanese sake, beers, whiskies and plum wines, as well as select cocktails. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Izakaya Goku sells inexpensive lunch specials for those looking to stop for an afternoon bite. Grab a group of friends and enjoy interior or outdoor seating with a hearty range of meals that will assuredly satisfy.
