Opt for free-range eggs from local farms

With the return of The Gourmet Farmer to SBS, we’ve been thinking more and more about getting some chooks of our own. But unfortunately, city living doesn’t always cater to a household heaving with animals, so we’ve compiled a list of local egg farms (and the grocers that stock them) so you can trace the origins of your morning meal topper – and know that the chooks who produce the eggs have a happy free-range life.

The Egg Man

The free-range egg stall at The Village Markets at Kelvin Grove is hard to miss, decked out in its yellow drapes. The freshly laid, free-range, cage-free eggs from The Egg Man partake in strict accreditation processes to be given the tick of approval to be sold to local egg punters. The Egg Man also supplies to cafes, restaurants and stores.

Nindigully

You know the salad mix stall at all the markets? The one with bowls of baby spinach, rocket, watercress, beautiful little tomatoes and, if you’re lucky, baby cucumbers from Toowoomba? This stall also stocks Nindigully free-range eggs. Find them at The Village Markets at Kelvin Grove and West End Markets each Saturday.

Ovaston Organics

Ovaston Organics is based at Southbrook in the Darling Downs and has been producing organic, free-range eggs since 2004. Find them at Flannerys at Taringa and Wynnum.

Organic Egg Farmers

Organic Egg Farmers free-range eggs can be found at local Wray Organic grocers. Certified organic, these eggs come from farms free of synthetic chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers, so the hens can roam organic pastures.

Tom’s Ethical Eggs

If you’re headed down the coast for Bluesfest this weekend, pop by Harvest Deli at Newrybar to pick up some of Tom’s ethical eggs. Tom is located just up the road in Lawler’s Lane and regularly drops in to the deli with a fresh supply of eggs.
