Discover the history of Fat Hen Farm

Fond memories of running through rows of olive groves, picking the firm fruit by hand and then watching as mum slowly cures the green pods may be lost to the past, but the purity of locally grown and marinated olives continues.

Sprawling 180 acres on the bank of Fat Hen Creek in Kilkivan, Fat Hen Farm grows more than 600 Manzanillo and Corregiola olives trees amongst pastureland. The small family-owned farm in Southeast Queensland produces premium extra virgin olive oil, marinated olives, and a gourmet food range featuring infused olive oils, black olive tapenade, dukkah, caramelised balsamic vinegar, olive oil dressings and preserved lemons. Infusions are imbued with garlic, pepper, lemon myrtle, mint, basil or chilli and lime, with the entire range free of preservatives, chemicals, colours and additives.

The highly fertile property once produced a variety of fodder crops such as lucerne, oats and sorghum, and has long operated as a dairy farm and fat cattle enterprise. Today the farm also grazes and breeds Wiltshire Horn sheep and fattens up to 50 Droughtmaster steers. The cattle graze on the grasses of the rolling hills, while happy fat hens also peck about, supplying fresh eggs for the farm. The sheep were introduced to the farm to assist with managing the vast olive groves – they keep the grass down around the trees and remove the water shoots from the trunks. The olive leaf they consume also keeps the sheep free of internal parasites and adds to the flavour of their meat.
