TWE Ethical Coffee Company

Ethical Coffee Company makes eco-friendly coffee pods

Composed of plastic and aluminum, traditional coffee pods can take more than 500 years to decompose, and in some cases, need to have the lids removed and be emptied of coffee grounds in order to be recycled.

Unsatisfied with this detrimental affect on the environment, ex-Nespresso chief Jean-Paul Gaillard founded Ethical Coffee Company to produce cheaper, greener coffee pods. After three years in development, the company now distributes its coffee pods worldwide, with New Zealand company Honest Coffee Co taking the reins in NZ and Australia.

Ethical Coffee Company capsules are biodegradable and made from plant fibres and starch – which means they can be disposed of with the general household rubbish, or added to your compost or worm farm. The capsule has been designed to break down within six months after use, biodegrading 1.5 years earlier than an orange peel. The quality of the coffee and the technical nature of the capsule design continue to generate barista-standard espresso, and the pods are compatible with all Nespresso and similar pod machines.
