Dovetail on Overend cafe opens in Norman Park

Perched on the corner of Overend and Dickens Streets in the tranquil suburb of Norman Park, Dovetail on Overend is charming the locals with specialty coffee, quality tea and homemade delights.

As the specialty coffee culture gains momentum in Brisbane, the pearls are no longer relegated to the inner city but are now scattered through the suburbs of this sun-drenched region. One such suburban gem, Dovetail on Overend, is indeed a special find – a relaxing destination where locals meet, mothers groups form and strangers connect. The community-driven space is a project of love by former cafe reviewer Adam Thomson and his wife Rejoice, alongside a team of passionate helpers.

The small hole-in-the-wall space sprinkles its guests along the sunny street-corner footpath, while nourishing them with top-quality caffeine and healthy, house-made fare. Rare beans are sourced internationally and roasted locally by Uncle Joe’s Coffee, while Cartel Roasters takes care of the six specialty teas on offer. Try the house coffee blend Hey Joe or the rotating single origins, and peek through the open galley-style kitchen as the experts master the AeroPress. Dovetail on Overend is one of the first few cafes in the country to kick the Nuova Simonelli machine into action, which not only boasts in-built climate control but also perfect measurements – meaning every cup of coffee emerging from the space should be sitting rather close to perfection.

After a settling-in period of light snacks only, a more substantial all-day menu kicked in last weekend, with standouts like the Banneton Bakery brandied fruit loaf served with figs and nuts, and the weekend breakfast option of baked eggs topped with goats cheese. The majority of dishes are made in-house, with the addition of sweet treats such as gluten-free salted caramel brownies sourced from local Wandering Cooks-based baker, Two Teaspoons. Those with food intolerances are well taken care of, with gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan options gracing the food menu, as well as Bonsoy, Zymil, Cooloolah A2 and almond milk on offer.
