Colombian coffee hut Del Patron opens in South Brisbane
Just when you think you know a city, it conjures up something as wonderful as a quirky Colombian coffee and hot chocolate hut.
Those who do the daily commute along Peel Street would be forgiven for casting half-open eyes over the grey wash of office towers and industrial lots that run through South Brisbane. But passersby are in for a delightful surprise, with a colourful wooden hut having swung open its windows and fired up a coffee machine.
After winning over students at Griffith University’s Nathan campus, Colombian coffee enthusiast Carlos Yepes teamed up with Guatemalan baking doyenne Anna Castillo to create Del Patron cafe. Guests can recline in open bay windows as they sip on cups of Colombian coffee and South American cold drinks like Pony Malta and strawberry or pineapple Jarritos. Traditional mocha brews see Colombian Coffee Growers Federation coffee beans teamed with potent dark chocolate, brown sugar and spices, and served in a traditional vessel. A range of pre-prepared sandwiches, wraps and pastries is available, with Anna planning to add homemade empanadas and flatbread arepas to the menu soon.
Ever the thoughtful neighbour, Del Patron takes advantage of its unique position close to the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre by participating in the Suspended Coffee community initiative, in which customers can leave credit for a coffee lover in need. Currently operating Monday to Friday, Del Patron will launch Saturday trading hours with a festive Latin celebration on August 3.
