New York cool at Super Whatnot, Burnett Lane

Like a neo-speakeasy, Super Whatnot opened quietly; its presence whispered of in small circles of those in the know. Keeping it a secret is a part of its charm, especially as it only houses 60 people.

Tucked into the ‘delivery door’ end of Burnett Lane in the city, this laneway bar makes you feel like you’ve flashed back to the Prohibition era in New York.

Polished industrial with a dash of Mad Men swank, the interior is raw wood, metal and exposed brick with contrasting plants adding softer touches.

With a rotating list of boutique beers (including Capalaba-based Bacchus Brewing Company), eclectic wines and cocktails resembling old-world and new styles, you can sway to some soul or jazz while enjoying a glass of rioja and a plate of slow-cooked pork tacos. Cocktail of the moment is the ‘Baron’, featuring pineapple-infused pisco, banana, lime, grapefruit, decanter bitters and hefeweisen.

Now open from midday on Fridays, Super Whatnot offers nifty seclusion for a late lunch of pupusas or a neat evening swill.
