Travel x coffee: Canadiano wooden pourover box

Taking your love of freshly brewed filter coffee off the grid can be a bulky challenge as you tote your scales, kettle, pourover cone, grinder, beans and cup into the wilderness. Making this mission a little more lightweight is the Canadiano wooden pourover box.

The Canadian-method coffeemaker is crafted from wood – birch, cherry, walnut or white oak – and contains a metal filter. Used to brew one cup at a time, the Canadiano is unique in that it absorbs the oils of specific beans into the material, so that they become part of every brew, with each type of timber matched to different roasts from around the world. The walnut and white oak editions are designed for use with darker roasts and earthier flavours from Southeast Asia, while the birch and cherry styles have been crafted to match beans with citrus and nutty notes.

To use, sit the Canadiano on top of your cup, add two spoonfuls of ground coffee and pour hot water into the wooden bowl, stirring a few times. Using a metal filter over its paper counterparts lowers the product’s environmental impact, and results in a rich and silky cup of coffee. You can buy the pourover boxes individually and as a complete set of four, or adopt a DoubleDouble version with space to brew two cups at once.
