California Native adds some cool Americana to Coorparoo

This trendy Coorparoo establishment has drawn inspiration from the flavours and lifestyle of southern-California, offering a mix of Americana and Mexican cuisine that is sure to impress.

Influenced by travel and a love of good food, young couple Karl and Anna Zammit opened California Native to share their fondness for the flavours of America’s west coast. The duo took over the space formerly occupied by Le Classic in Coorparoo in mid-2015 and immediately set about transforming it into a stylish Californian-style surf lodge. Aiming to make a venue that was expressive and fun, Karl and Anna set about overhauling the space with a new coat of paint and comfortable wooden furniture. With small touches and authentic decorations sourced from America including surfboards, memorabilia and artwork providing a glimpse of different eras, California Native has honed in on a style that is identifiably West Coast.

Influenced by his family’s American background and history in Brisbane’s hospitality scene, Karl has explored the heritage of Californian cuisine and with Anna and head chef Matt Shannon has created a menu of American-meets-Mexican eats. The menu is divided into a number of sections such as starters, salads, tacos, nachos and heftier mains. Using predominantly local produce, California Native’s impressive meals boast generous portions and traditional flavours. Every meal starts with corn chips and salsa on arrival before patrons face the difficult task of picking from the thorough menu. Start with some baked ranch wings and the SoCal Waldorf salad before tucking into fried spicy prawn tacos, the Malibu Wagyu Burger, Monterey Bay Toasty Fish Sandwich, chargrilled Mojave Pollo Grande or some baked enchiladas. Be sure to save room for dessert – the Aztec Brownie and Soda Shop Banana Split come highly recommended. California Native has also sourced a range of wines and craft beers from California, as well as top shelf tequila and Mezcal. Cocktails are a specialty, with a range of delicious concoctions whipped up with a distinct Californian bent. Karl and Anna are aiming to make many of the meals gluten-free and as nutritious as possible – be sure to stop in often and watch the menu grow.
