Pick up an art-adorned Cake Wines bottle

Wine goes hand in hand with exhibition openings, so it should come as no surprise that art makers and winemakers would eventually come together to create something special.

The creation of young oenophiles Mike Smith and Glen Cassidy, Cake Wines is an Australian boutique wine company producing locally grown grapes in art-adorned bottles. Based in the Adelaide Hills, Cake Wines is opening up the realm of wine production to the creative community, collaborating both with artists and other young winemakers. Cake Wines was born from a desire to craft approachable and enjoyable wines that are stylistically true to the grape and region, though which challenge complexity just enough to keep you guessing.

The brand currently crafts the Young Wine Makers Series – a short-run release in collaboration with emerging winemakers – and The Artist Series. This range of light-to-medium-bodied wines sees the labels adorned in the artworks of local artists, including the Neon Nebula sauvignon blanc by Beci Orpin, Unusual Findings cabernet sauvignon by Mark Whelan and Quiet pinot grigio by Hollie Martin. Cake Wines also runs its annual Archi-Bottle Prize, where a shortlist of submitted artworks is narrowed down, with the winner’s work showcased on a special summer release. Playing its part within the creative community, Cake Wines hosts pop-up bars, rooftop dinners, film nights and supports exhibition openings. Having discovered some of their favourite music, art and culture through independent radio stations, the pair also gives back 10% of proceeds to FBi (Sydney), 4ZZZ (Brisbane) and RTR (Perth).
