Try Vietnamese for breakfast at Cafe O-Mai, Annerley

Perched on a corner in Annerley is a gem of a cafe, fusing Eastern and Western cuisines across breakfast and lunch. Breakfast at Cafe O-Mai is a multicultural affair, with Brioche French Toast with vanilla poached rhubarb, fresh orange segments topped with housemade labna and toasted pistachio sidling up alongside traditional Pho, Rice Paper Rolls and Crispy Spring Rolls.

Coffee can come in your traditional latte form on the Toby’s Estate heavy-bodied Wooloomooloo blend or Vietnamese-style, with imported coffee slow dripped over condensed milk and poured over ice for a cool treat. Sweet Corn and Zucchini Fritters also feature at breakfast, while the Pork Meatballs in rich tomato sauce with quail eggs served with a warm baguette is the Vietnamese equivalent of savoury mince.

Come lunch, traditional Asian foodstuffs are rolled out, with an extensive Banh Mi selection that will hardly make a dint in your hip pocket. The Pho is brewed for two days before being served with rice noodles, bean sprouts, basil and a squeeze of lemon, while the Vermicelli Noodle Salad can come topped with chargrilled lemongrass pork, chicken or beef, crackling roast pork, spring rolls, or, for the indecisive diner, a bit of everything.

The menu is glutard friendly, there’s Bonsoy available for coffee and the homemade granola, and there’s also traditional lemon soda and cold-pressed fresh juice for the non-coffee drinker. This friendly suburban cafe has a lot to offer, so come with an empty stomach and be prepared to fall a little in love.
