Nosh on breakfast tagine at hidden gem Cafe Grenadine
It doesn’t take much for a cafe to become one of your favourites. All you need is a sun-filled space, a cosy nook to sit, satisfying sips and food that makes your mouth water. Simple as this may seem, it can be difficult to tick all of these boxes. Well guess what? We’ve found a place that we think could easily become your new favourite, and it goes by the name of Cafe Grenadine.
Marilyn Lukies is no stranger to hospitality. After owning a restaurant in Spain for 14 years and consulting in Morocco for another six and a half, Marilyn decided it was time to return home to Australia. Moving back to Melbourne, she craved warmer weather and a sense of community, prompting her to relocate to sunny, friendly Brisbane (sunshine state wins again!). This is lucky for us – we get to reap the benefits of Marilyn’s move, since the opening of her latest project Cafe Grenadine. Taking over an old store front on Martha Street in Camp Hill, Cafe Grenadine’s space has been completely revitalised , given a fresh lick of white paint and a relaxed, paired-back design with hints of Moroccan and tropical influences – think tufts of greenery, mountains of fresh pineapples and pomegranates, and coconut lampshades.
If you’re not immediately drawn in by the welcoming atmosphere of Cafe Grenadine, the food is sure to push you over the line … although somehow we doubt much pushing will be required. Marilyn has worked closely with chef Kel to devise a menu that nudges the boundaries of your standard suburban cafe. Although the menu is served all day, there are some distinctly breakfasty options and others more associated with the middle of the day and beyond. Lick your lips to delights such as spicy berber omelette tagine with warm flat bread, pumpkin waffles with maple-syrup poached pear, salmon fish cake with lemon caper butter, shaved fennel and herb salad, and herbed cheese galette. The makings of what will hopefully become a small general store component are already in the works at Cafe Grenadine – you’ll spy a small selection of Mayde Tea, the house blend of Bear Bones coffee, Goomeri honey and Danny’s Bread to purchase and take home. Marilyn has plenty of ideas in the works – stay tuned for more details in the future.
