Speakeasy bar Blind Tiger saunters into Bulimba

Like the underground bars of generations past, Blind Tiger is a hidden haunt that offers a secluded spot for a nightcap, an intimate rendezvous or casual drinks with friends.

Robert Harding might be familiar to many as the proprietor of The Moustachery, a popular barber for bearded blokes in Bulimba and New Farm. Looking to shake things up, Rob has put down the scissors momentarily to open Blind Tiger – a cosy bar next to The Moustachery’s Bulimba location on Oxford Street. Named after the Prohibition-era custom of placing stuffed tigers in windows to alert patrons to the availability of alcohol, Blind Tiger is similarly secretive with an emphasis on word-of-mouth advertising and little self-promotion. The cosy space is filled with vintage furniture and lamps while the walls have been adorned with lavishly framed paintings and taxidermy, with candles dripping wax freely down ornate holders.

Coming onboard to helm the kitchen is Hannah Grey and Thomas Jones who jumped at the chance to create a menu of tapas-style food offering, imbuing the dishes with a homely and humble vibe. The mantra is ‘simple food, done well’, and dishes such as lamb koftas with house made tzatziki, roasted potatoes with chorizo, grilled portabello mushrooms with blue cheese, tacos, nachos sliders and cheese boards are all perfect examples of this approach. Sam Tripet (formerly of Byblos) has been appointed bar manager and oversees the drinks offering, which aims to reflect the growing scene of boutique distilleries while ensuring it provides something patrons will love every time. There is a strong focus on single release and independently bottled whiskies from around the world, with the selection changing based on what is trending. Blind Tiger also boats six beer taps pouring a selection of brews, including Blind Tiger Lager, which has been brewed specially for the bar. A small but choice selection of wine is also available, with the bar offering rounded out by a selection of cocktails, boilermakers and other concoctions. Blind Tiger’s bartenders well versed in their craft – non-whiskey drinkers can have something special and enjoyable whipped up in front of them.
