Billykart West End adds a new dimension to Brisbane’s south side
One of the most anticipated openings in recent memory has finally arrived. Billykart West End is the new dining spot from acclaimed chef Ben O’Donoghue and De-arne Wicks.
Annerley’s Billykart Kitchen has long been a favourite of Brisbane breakfast eaters. Having won best new cafe and best cafe overall in The Weekend Edition’s EAT/drink Awards in 2014, it was a safe bet that any new venue from the Billykart camp would draw serious interest. Ben O’Donoghue and De-arne Wicks enlisted the help of Ben Roberts to set up Billykart West End, a sibling to the Annerley spot that continues the trend of excellent food with a few new twists thrown into the mix. The venue’s fit out is similar to the comfortable vibe of Billykart Kitchen, but where Annerley’s was design to be reminiscent of a local corner store, West End feels more like you are relaxing in the back yard. Exposed brick, white picket fence and lattice decorations plus stained glass windows help the venue fit seamlessly into the eclectic West End aesthetic, making it inviting and relaxed thanks to a homely yet polished feel. Billykart West End also boasts a large bar area with a range of tap and bottled beers, wines, cocktails and spirits as well as takeaway coffee and pastries if you are passing by in the morning.
Those who are fans of Billykart Kitchen’s menu offering will be pleased to know that the West End location carries over a good portion of the breakfast and lunch menu, but Ben has added a few new must-try meals. Favourites such as the Aussie Asian eggs with skull island tiger prawn and bacon and the crispy corn fritters with grilled avocado are on the menu, but patrons can also sample the spanner crab and scallop congee or sprouted seed loaf with avocado tahini and taramosalata. Lunch additions include the Billykart potato waffle croquet madame, and the eggs bender, which boasts potato waffles, hot smoked salmon, poached eggs and horseradish hollandaise. The biggest new feature at Billykart West End is the dinner menu, which encompasses a selection of shared starters and mains featuring spit roasted meats such as whole chickens, quail, lamb belly and rump.
The next few weeks will see the location add Billykart Provisions, a deli and grocer that will sell a range of goods that feature on the dine-in menu. Preserves and sauces will be on offer, as will a range of charcuterie items, cheese, pastries and a selection of Australian spirits and craft beer that patrons can try beforehand at the bar.
