Bench Espresso mixes coffee and art in West End

Showcasing local lowbrow, graffiti and street art, Bench Espresso is a cool hideaway in which to relax and be inspired.

A new uber-cool haunt has opened up in West End, one that mixes delectable coffee with eye-catching art. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cafe is located at the end of a small alleyway between Ouzeri and the space formerly occupied by The Spaghetti House Trattoria on Boundary Street. Meandering down the short alley will lead you to the astro-turfed entrance to Bench Espresso – a new coffee spot that doubles as an art gallery. Owners Owen and Belinda are two hospitality stalwarts with a keen interest in art, that have searched for a hole-in-the-wall space to combine their two loves into one comfortable venue.

Bench Espresso has transformed an unused corrugated shed into a hip space with simple furniture, artistic trappings and crisp interior walls that have been adorned with artworks of all shapes and sizes. Owen has worked as a freelance curator for the past five years and will be drawing on his experience to bring the freshest work to the walls of Bench Espresso throughout the year. New exhibitions will be showcased every four to five weeks featuring an eclectic mix of street art and graffiti work. As for the consumables, Bench Espresso serves its own signature coffee blend roasted by Bellaroma in Sydney, as well as a selection of teas, juices and croissants. Slip down the alleyway and have a gander at the works on display and stick around for a coffee while you are at it.
