Puppy-friendly cafe Atticus Finch opens in Paddington

Perched on a corner of Latrobe Terrace in Paddington, a sprightly new cafe is proffering wholesome eats and a puppy-friendly environment. Tucked in next to Knitch, Atticus Finch is the creation of Sandra Hind – one, a puppy fan (she has two puppies herself), and two, an admirer of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

While the bounty of four-legged friends latched to the front wall and the presence of some baby-cino-wielding children may have you rendering Atticus Finch a family affair, all manner of coffee geekery behind the machine will draw in the coffee purists. The Paddington newcomer sources its beans from New Zealand-via-Melbourne company Coffee Supreme, with rotating single-origins set to come from a range of roasters, including Wolff Coffee Roasters and Proud Mary. Along with cold aeropress for those steamy Paddington afternoons, Atticus Finch also serves up a bottomless cup of single-origin filter coffee made on a Moccamaster – like endless diner coffee for those with discerning tastebuds. Sandra has also installed a soda stream tap to produce still or sparkling filtered water for your table – brought to you in a vintage milk bottle nonetheless – and soda to top up syrups from Six Barrel Soda Co.. You’ll also find also Bunker Heirloom hot chocolates, Nudie juice poppers for the little ‘uns and Byron Bay Tea Company teas on the menu.

As for eats, everything is made on the premises with the menu an all-day breakfast and lunch affair. Winter warmers like black sticky rice with banana, tapioca and coconut or oat porridge with poached pear, honey, pistachios and cinnamon sidle up alongside toast with ‘regular’ or ‘amazing’ toppings – opt for simple nutella or intriguing satay chilli paste with tamarind and coriander. Toasties of grilled vegetables, honey-roasted bacon or roasted cumin chicken appeal at any time of the day, while salads lean towards the creative – think miso-baked salmon with Japanese rice, sesame, wombok, spring onion, pickled ginger and dashi dressing. Vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, and a surfeit of gluten-, dairy- and egg-free fare is also available. The master of all the dietary requirements is a gooey chocolate cake with figs, dates, raisins, walnuts, almond, pistachio and chia, which is gluten-, dairy-, egg-free and vegan.

Puppies are permitted on the deck, where they can slurp up water from the bowls set out the front and be treated to a puppy biscuit, while owners nosh on crumbly cookies of their own. Unfurl the mind over a malted milk and oatmeal cookie and your morning cup, while soaking up the buttery light on the deck. The mellifluous space pairs white and natural wood as a fresh base, while Kelly Nieves of Bowerbird Design Collective assisted with sourcing furniture for the cafe. Frank + Mimi completed the signwriting, with Emily Devers also handpainting the bird mural on ‘the book wall’. Retail shelves have just been added to the interior, which will see coffee products like tampers and bags of beans line the shelves, along with locally made doggy treats soon too.
