Cru Bar’s At Sixes and Sevens opens on James Street

Built in 1878, the distinct cottage on the corner of James and Arthur Streets in Fortitude Valley was once the home of Lawrence Muir. From 1926 a shopfront was added, with a newsagency operating on site until recently. Now the joint cottage and shop space has been given a new lease on life as new public house At Sixes and Sevens.

Retaining an element of nostalgia and embracing tropical Queensland nuances, At Sixes and Sevens is a new gastropub by the tipple-savvy folk behind Cru Bar + Cellar. Perched at number 67 James Street, At Sixes and Sevens draws its name from its location as well as the age-old phrase ‘at Sixes and Sevens’, which means to be in a state of confusion or disarray.

Nodding to the simplicity of a home-cooked meal, At Sixes and Sevens serves up bar snacks, share plates and hearty pub meals that remain clever in flavour pairings. Dill fish fingers and smoked ham toasties come served in camping mugs, while the Bangalow Pork Sausage Roll with Pear Chutney leans a lunchtime staple towards the gourmet. Match these fresh seasonal offerings with a cool cider or beer, or a carafe of wine served straight from the barrel.

The interior sees tropical wallpaper meshing with concrete and raw lightbulbs, while wood from the original cottage has been salvaged to form an exposed stud timber box around the kitchen. Take your beverage on the deck and watch James Street whirl by, or tuck your party into an indoor pocket where you can admire the moss-green tiled barfront topped with a wide American Walnut slab.

At Sixes and Seven will open its doors this weekend.
