Greek society is one that is uncompromisingly proud of its culture and achievements. This pride is rather justified when you consider all of the great things the small Mediterranean nation has produced over time, from great thinkers like Socrates to heavenly dishes like honey puffs. Join the Greek community in celebration of the nation this weekend with the return of Paniyiri Greek Festival.

Paniyiri Greek Festival was first held in 1976 by a group of passionate Greek Australians, eager to share the delights of Greece with their Brisbane neighbours. At the festival, food and drinks overflow freely, alongside lively entertainment that includes plenty of opportunities to dance and participate in a competition or two. Amongst the many entertaining offerings are Hellenic dancers, plate smashing and special guest appearances from local celebrities.

At the festival’s core, however, is a love of food. The annual celebration of all things Hellenic is a joyous exercise in eating – food is at the forefront of Paniyiri, with more than 200,000 honey puffs and 500 kg of haloumi consumed at the two-day event. More than 30 food stalls that specialise in cuisine from all over the Mediteranean nation are presented to guests spread throughout the park.

In 2013, the Paniyiri festivities will be held over the weekend of May 18–19 at its traditional home of Musgrave Park in West End. Saturday is open from 12:00–10:00 pm, while Sunday opens at 10:00 am and winds down at 7:00 pm. For those who don’t want the festivities to end, there is also The Official Paniyiri After Party (accompanied by tunes from DJ Kossi) at The Greek Club on Sunday evening.

While a stint in Wintergarden whetted our appetite for perfectly tailored blazers and Japanese kimono shorts, Pistols At Dawn quietly closed earlier this year, allowing the team to conjure a new plan for the brand.

The menswear boutique has now transferred its presence to James Street, reopening in a larger showroom alongside Scanlan & Theodore. The space is decorated in similar vein to its previous Wintergarden lodgings, with wooden shelving handcrafted by the team holding the brand’s latest collection of signature jackets, trousers and shirts, and a familiar red rug sitting atop polished concrete flooring. Dormeuil ties, fashion tomes and The Cloakroom pocket squares also sit neatly arranged about the shop.

A new Pistols at Dawn made-to-measure denim service launched with the opening of the store last Friday, allowing gents to order a pair of jeans to their exact measurements. Store manager Lachlan Sinclair is on hand to fit the jeans for you, and he also takes evening appointments for fittings. Custom jeans come in three basic fits and are hewn from a range of denims sourced from suppliers used for Pistols at Dawn garments. Once a style is chosen, the jeans are then fitted at a number of points.

In other news, Pistols at Dawn’s brother brand The Cloakroom recently began producing its own publication, The Cloakroom Standard, which delivers manly style tips and updates of the various goings on of the company.

Pistols At Dawn
Shop 11, 46 James Street, Fortitude Valley
Open: Wednesday to Thursday 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, Friday: 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, Saturday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Sunday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Winter is about to set in and while our cold toes may mean sandals are the furthest footwear from our mind, those bound for a European summer may be in need of a little warm-weather inspiration.

The first Avarca sandal originated in Menorca – a small island in the Spanish Mediterranean, where the land is dry and hard. Invented to combat the harsh landscape, Avarcas are strong, flexible and simple in design, ideal for keeping farmers’ and villagers’ feet cool and comfortable. In the past, the sole of avarcas was made from recycled tyres, while modern-day designs use lightweight rubber and high-quality, authentic leather to form each sandal.

Reinvented as a wardrobe essential for comfort all day long, Avarcas now come in bright colours as well as rustic browns, along with metallic, glitter and animal print offerings. Avarcas Pons has specialised in artisan Menorcan sandals since 1945, with the current manufacturer’s third-generation shoemakers keeping the tradition alive. Pack with you for your summer escape overseas or tuck away in the wardrobe ready for when winter passes.

Founded in 2008, Three Over One is the creation of Sydney-based lad, Jim Thompson. Based around the ethos of designing hardworking, honest apparel, the label outfits both ladies and lads in classic pieces that harbour longevity of wear and style. With an appreciation of the precise workmanship of the past, Three Over One creates sweatshirts, tees and raglans, chinos and denim, work-shirt dresses and the odd structured blazer in style of ‘dishevelled charm’.

Featuring the kind of clothing perfect for throwing on of a cool Saturday morning and moseying down to the local farmers markets and out for brunch, the autumn/winter 2013 collection is cosy and comfortable without sacrificing your street style credentials.
'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others' is perhaps the most famous (and revealing) line from George Orwell's literary piece, Animal Farm. The allegorical novel is renowned for being one of the world's most admired political critiques and is now about to return to QPAC's stage in a theatrical version.

Animal Farm was presented as a play for Brisbane locals back in 2011 and was so successful it will again return in 2013 for a five-month national tour. The performance stays true to George Orwell’s original work and delves into the novel’s illustration of the ugliness of greed and power in society. Animal Farm follows the story of a group of pigs who have assumed control of Manor Farm. They enact their own rules and principles of Animalism for a ‘better life’, but soon society turns to chaos as greed for power overshadows the original dream of freedom.

QPAC’s version of Animal Farm is directed by Michael Futcher and is brought to reality with the assistance of shake & stir theatre co. The play stars a cast of well-known Queensland actors, including Ross Balbuziente, Tim Dashwood, Nelle Lee, Bryan Probets and Nick Skubij. Animal Farm will be performed at QPAC from May 15–28.

Perhaps you’ve read the book or seen the original film, or maybe ‘old sport’ has weaseled its way into your vocabulary of late. But if The Great Gatsby hasn’t yet tinged your lifestyle, the latest offering from Brooks Brothers may tilt your sense of dress towards the roaring twenties.

Mentioned several times within the original text by wordsmith F. Scott Fitzgerald, Brooks Brothers has designed a limited-edition menswear collection inspired by the costumes in Baz Luhrmann’s soon-to-be-released adaption of The Great Gatsby. The international retailer was also behind more than 500 outfits in the new film, drawing inspiration from the dreamlike realm of pristine rolling lawns and lavish parties of the original novel.

Produced in collaboration with the new film’s costume designer, Catherine Martin, the collection mixes Art Deco-esque day and formal wear, including tuxedos, suiting, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories. Designed to replicate the stylings of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), the Brooks Brothers collection has been tweaked to be wearable in our current day.

To complete your new dapper look, Tiffany & Co. has also released the Ziegfeld Collection, including a pair of cufflinks in sterling silver and black enamel, inspired by the style and sophistication of the 1920s – the design featuring a finely traced ‘JG’.

In an age of increasing hair gel usage and metrosexuality, the lines of what constitutes manliness can be somewhat blurry. It's this confusing territory that is traipsed in the latest theatrical production to arrive on stage at Fortitude Valley's Judith Wright Centre, Sons of Sin – a foray into the definition of a modern man.

Sons of Sin is the provocative new creation of theatre group The Danger Ensemble and has set itself the task of unravelling male stereotypes. The play itself features a group of young twenty-something males on stage, whose changing interactions and underlying brotherhood forms the main plotline. Expect to explore the themes of expectations, history, pressures, demands and taboos regarding the modern male as a part of the performance. The play also delves into modern rites of passage, including music festivals, sporting matches and drinking games, and is accompanied by a revealing confession or two.

Partnering the play is a soundtrack that favours the multi-layered electro music beloved by much of today’s youth. The soundtrack itself was created and played live by British DJ Henry Collins, who is known under the name Shitmat.

Guests in the audience should also note that due to the testosterone-laden production’s themes, they may wish to avoid wearing their finery – patrons have been warned that they may get wet, dirty, splashed or spoiled throughout the production. Tickets to Sons of Sin are currently available on the Judith Wright Centre website.

Ross Wootten began making bespoke shoes in the 1970s in South Australia, having trained under master Belgian shoemaker, George Koleff. With afternoons spent eagerly watching on in his father’s tiny studio fused in his memory, Jess Cameron-Wootten continued in the family footsteps, crafting shoes from scratch.

The founder of Wootten, Jess handcrafts footwear, leather bags, tech sleeves and aprons for gents and gentleladies. The Wootten studio and shop space in Prahran, Melbourne, offers a small-run, classically designed range from brogue, oxford and derby styles, as well as a cycling shoe. But it’s Wootten’s bespoke shoe service that is the real head-turner, allowing your imagination to form an idea for your perfect shoe, before Jess adapts the ideas into reality.

The bespoke service sees measurements taken and leather and materials selected, before hashing out the design, practical requirements and construction methods of your pair of shoes. Leathers can range from calf, kid and kangaroo, to crocodile, snake and barramundi, with the label’s particularly dashing aprons coming in leather and Japanese denim. The inaugural Hong Kong edition will run May 23–26 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, luring gallerists, collectors, artists, curators, critics and art lovers alike to experience an abundance of dynamic and immersive global artworks.

Five sectors will explore the various dimensions of modern and contemporary art, with the Insights sector showing galleries specifically from Asia and Asia-Pacific. For this sector, Art Basel Hong Kong received more than 100 applications, with only nine Australian galleries accepted, including our very own Ryan Renshaw Gallery – the only Brisbane gallery on show. Selected on the strength of the proposed exhibition, as well as the strength of the gallery’s line-up of artists and exhibitions at their home base throughout the year, Insights provides a platform to experience the highest-quality artists from the region.

Ryan Renshaw Gallery will be presenting two artists at its exhibition – New Zealand artist Peter Madden and Australian artist Rodney Glick. Peter creates enormous collages with images taken from the pages of National Geographic, set between four layers of Perspex, bringing depth to the intricacy. Rodney Glick creates large-scale sculptures of European figures carved in a traditionally Asian way. The room will see 13 of Peter Madden’s works line the walls, while three large-scale Rodney Glick sculptures will fill the floor space.
