Madama Butterfly

Abandon yourself to the sweeping emotion of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

A young Japanese girl falls in love with an American naval officer and is shunned by her family for marrying him. Soon after the wedding, her new husband sails back to America, leaving her to give birth to a son and patiently wait – as the seasons come and go – for his return. Although destitute and derided, she is sustained in her vigil by the hope that – one fine day – her husband’s ship will appear on the horizon. At this long-awaited moment, Butterfly’s euphoria turns to heartbreak, for her husband is not alone….

For over a century, Puccini‘s Madama Butterfly has transported audiences everywhere with its rich orchestration and unforgettable melodies including the Humming Chorus and One Fine Day (Un bel dì).

This highly acclaimed international production directed by Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage and conducted by Maestro Johannes Fritzsch is exclusive to Brisbane and features some of Australia’s finest opera artists, the magnificent Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Queensland Chorus.

Madama Butterfly is a co-production of Houston Grand Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genéve and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
