Into Paper

Into Paper is a contemporary view of papermaking and paper art, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Papermakers of Queensland. The exhibition showcases the experience and diversity of each artist’s practice, working with paper as an art medium not a substrate. Over 40 works by 23 artists have been selected for the exhibition to showcase the variety of paper art and techniques, and include hangings, sculptures, objects and artist books.

The artists in Into Paper specialise in making paper from locally sourced plant material, often harvesting nuisance species or those in abundance. The plant fibres are broken down in a long process starting with collection of plant material, then boiling and beating, resulting in a fibrous paper pulp. The pulp can be couched into sheets using mould and deckle equipment, poured onto a surface or applied directly onto moulds to form three dimensional shapes. Other techniques employed by the artists include painting, dyeing, stitching, rusting, collage, printmaking, and calligraphy. The resulting art works as shown in Into Paper demonstrate the remarkable diversity of the medium of paper, its strength often at odds with its apparent fragility.

Exhibition Opening: 10 for 10.30pm Saturday 13 December 2014.
