ii kanji: photographs of Japan – exhibition

ii kanji presents the photographic journal of Brisbane based photographer Chris Hoopmann from his 2014/15 trip to Japan. Translating roughly into ‘good vibes’, the series captures moments he experienced in a fusion of documentary, fine art and travel log to form a succinct depiction of the unique culture. The works in this show continue his practice exploring the rich tradition of the tourist as photographer by investigating how a photographer can approach the role of the tourist with a critical eye. ii kanji is Chris’ first photographic series shot exclusively overseas and will provide a fascinating insight into Japanese culture for seasoned travellers and newcomers alike.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a photo zine containing all the images from the series, limited to 30 copies for sale on the night, along with 10 limited edition hand made drink coaster sets of six images.

The opening party will be at Hoo Ha Bar in South Brisbane on Thursday February 11 from 7:00 pm and will feature Japanese inspired drinks, a one night installation of a video work and a Japanese future funk playlist curated by the artist.

ii kanji runs from the Tuesday February 9 to Friday March 15. Entry is free.
