Queensland’s largest and most loved annual event is almost here. More than 400,000 people will come together at the 2012 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in Brisbane from August 9 to 18 to see the best of Queensland with more than 10,000 animals, 23,000 competition entries, a smorgasbord of award-winning food and wine and hours of free family entertainment.
During the 10 days of Ekka, thousands of animals are housed just 1.6 kilometres from the CBD-making this event truly unique in the Australian landscape and epitomising city meets country. Animals have always been, and remain, a main attraction at the Ekka with the now famous Animal Nursery stemming back to 1964.
The Ekka is also Queensland’s premier competition event with 11,200 classes across 42 sections held throughout the 10 days of show. Staging competitions which seek to reward outstanding achievement, the expertise of a host of international judging heavyweights are brought in from as far afield as Europe, Northern Ireland, South Africa and the United States. For 10 days each August, competitions ranging from film to cattle, music, dance, cakes, vegetables, fish, cheese and ducks are judged.
Celebrating the 135th show this year, the Ekka is full of traditions, a unique atmosphere and childhood memories which have been passed down through generations of families. It’s a true Queensland experience and one not to be missed.
