Brisbane

Matthew Ryan’s Brisbane is a living, breathing picture postcard from Brisbane during wartime. The play takes us back to 1942, when Brisbane was a big country town jumping at shadows, never knowing if that buzz in the air was a cicada or a squadron of Japanese Zeroes. Drawing on true stories, this Queensland Theatre Company world premiere introduces us to 14-year-old Danny Fisher, whose pilot brother has been killed in the bombing of Darwin. As his family deals with heartbreak, the teen finds a surrogate sibling in Andy, an American stationed in Brisbane. But as the tension begins to rise between the American and Aussie servicemen, Danny hatches a reckless revenge plan against those who took his brother.
