World Press Photo Brisbane 2013

World Press Photo arrives at Brisbane Powerhouse

Few art forms convey as much emotion as a photograph taken during an honest and completely sincere moment in time. Whether violent or jubilant in nature, these photographs effortlessly strike an emotional connection with their viewers.

Celebrating the best of news photography, the annual World Press Photo awards are coveted prizes in nine categories that include news, nature and portraiture. Once the awards have been presented, a selection of the winning photographs is curated into an exhibition that travels around the world. This year’s moving images from the awards will be shown in 45 countries, with the Brisbane exhibition showing at Brisbane Powerhouse from June 1–23.

The winner of the World Press Photo of the year for 2012 was a photograph taken by Paul Hansen in November. The image shows a distressed group of men carrying two dead children to a mosque in Gaza City for burial. This image will be presented alongside winning photographs from each category as part of the exhibition.
