The Two Wheels Weekend List

Challenge yourself to a whole weekend (or at least one day) of bicycle-only transportation. Here’s a few tips for making the journey as smooth as possible.

While we prefer a speed more closely aligned to that of coasting rather than lighting bolt, every little effort to take two wheels over four when getting from A to B not only ups your eco kudos, but acts as a default bout of exercise. Slip on some comfortable shorts, pack lots of water and sunscreen into your backpack, and glide off to each pre-made date this weekend.

First stop on our weekend routine is the local farmers markets. A bicycle basket is essential for carting your vegetables home again – preferably one with high sides or a leather strap to secure your market bag to prevent losing your bounty over speed bumps. We’ve got our DIY hat on for this one, fashioning an old apple crate onto the rear rack.

Next stop is coffee, or an elongated breakfast-turned-lunch if your timetable allows. We’d suggest stopping and pausing for your morning caffeine hit, rather than continuing your journey with a coffee cup in hand. That handy little hole in your coffee cup lid is guaranteed to lose much of your beloved brew over those pesky speed bumps and uneven paths.

If you fancy yourself up for a challenge, why not plan your day’s activities around a particular route, like this river loop. Remember though if you stop off for a cool beverage of the hops or grape varietal along the way, a bicycle is still considered a vehicle and you’ll have to pause and digest a while, before continuing on. Alternatively, an art-filled afternoon of gallery hopping would end the day on an inspired note. Start in Fortitude Valley at REDSEA Gallery viewing the new Kerrie Hess exhibition before cruising to the city for Traversing borders: art from the Kimberley at QUT Art Museum. Perhaps end the day being transfixed by The Dark Party at Judith Wright Centre or viewing In Bob We Trust at Schonell Theatre.
