Explore performance art with Tension 17 at Metro Arts
Art has developed far beyond the paintbrush and these days involves all manner of things physical – from music to dance – in artistic ensembles. A contributor to the performance-art movement is Melbourne-based creator Timothy Kendall Edser, who will be showcasing his latest work at Metro Arts this weekend.
Timothy’s latest piece is Tension 17 – part of an ongoing show that continues to develop and evolve with each performance. The Tension series first began in Brisbane in 2001 and its return (now in its 17th version) will be a reunion of sorts between Timothy and the River City.
Tension 17 has been surrounded by secrecy for its upcoming debut, intended by Timothy to leave an element of surprise for the audience. All that can be expected is that the artist will continue his tradition of putting his body through a form of strenuous activity – previous works from the Tension series have seen Timothy compress his body in perspex, drag himself through lard, run and fall through solid walls and floors, and pose as classical sculpture complete with prosthetic supports. Through these forms Timothy explores the human body’s limits and endurance, as well as encounters the ideals of masculinity and human vulnerability.
