Queensland Centre for Photography

New works land at Queensland Centre of Photography

You may enjoy a foray into the world of disposables at festivals, or the classic point-and-shoot during your tourist travels, but how adept are you really with a lens? The world of photography goes far beyond party snapshots and awkward family photos – it’s an artform that is just as powerful as any paintbrush.

After a brief hiatus, the Queensland Centre of Photography (QCP) will again open its doors on December 1. In celebration of its return to the state arts scene, the centre will celebrate with the launch of a number of notable exhibitions. While the works on display at the artistic hub range dramatically, there are a few that dwell on land and location, favouring the Australian landscape as subjects.

Anna Carey’s Mirage is an encounter with the urban space of the Gold Coast. Her quirky multimedia creations weave model making with drawing, photography and video in each piece. Rather than present a reality, Mirage tries to invoke a sense of imagination in its viewer.

Shoufay Derz is another artist exhibiting at QCP who enjoys the exploration of landscape. The Sydney-based artist tends to employ a distinct array of media in her work, including photography, video and installation. Whatever tools she chooses to use, Shoufay examines the unknown – her latest creative piece Negatives was formed after extensive travelling through the remote areas of the Taklamakan desert in China and the volcanic landscape of Ambrym in Vanuatu.
