Monsters takes to the big screen at GOMA
Horror stories of monsters have been scaring us silly for centuries, in all manner of mediums. While being told by the flicker of the campfire is the most traditional way to share frightening folklore, the modern world has made the cinematic version a much more common alternative. The horror genre of film has since become one of the most beloved, helping to transform frightening stories from book to big screen for millions around the world to enjoy.
The ghoulish and the gory will be celebrated with a huge selection of films at GOMA from this weekend, when the arts hub introduces the Monsters film program. Six separate genres of monster stories will be explored during two months of screenings – Bloodthirsty Fiends, Zombies, Mutants and Shapeshifters, Misunderstood Monsters, Mad Doctors, Foreign Entities and Monstrous Absurdities included.
From April 19 to June 2, the films will be screened at the Australian Cinémathèque and will showcase a selection of films that range drastically in genre, depending on the period in which they were created. Some have been plucked from the ridiculous gore (and somewhat questionable special effects) employed in the 1930s, while there also will be those filmed in the last few years. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, King Kong, The Lost Boys and Let the Right One In are just a handful of the frighteningly scary films to screen throughout the themed season.
