MAAP SPACE Opening

New media art exhibits at MAAP SPACE in Fortitude Valley

The first of its kind in Australia, MAAP SPACE has opened in Brisbane, dedicating its heritage walls to featuring media art from Australia and the Asia Pacific.

A hub for innovative and non-traditional presentations of media art, MAAP SPACE is the creation of Media Art Asia Pacific (MAAP), a cultural not-for-profit organisation, which has produced touring exhibitions and festivals for the last 15 years. Creating new opportunities for local artists and the ability to share some of the international artists found on journeys afar, MAAP SPACE has found a home in the heritage buildings of Constance Street in Fortitude Valley.

With a growing culture and interest in new media and contemporary art in Brisbane, this exhibition space will act as an anchor for ideas, networks, artists and activities surrounding this medium in Australia. Featuring regular curated exhibitions, MAAP’s opening solo exhibit is by China’s most distinguished media artist, Zhang Peili, who emerged in the first wave of Chinese contemporary art in the 1980s. The exhibition explores this senior artist’s treatment of screen media, from his early works in VHS to his recent use of LED technology. This first exhibition runs until September 15.
