Queensland artists are celebrated in GOMA Q
The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art will be showcasing new and old works from some of Queensland’s best creative minds from July 11 to October 11.
In what will be the first in a series of exhibitions examining current contemporary art practice in Queensland, GOMA Q is a far-reaching exhibition that includes 31 artists and collectives from across the Sunshine State. The exhibition has been assembled by QAGOMA Director Chris Saines and curators Peter McKay and Bruce McLean and will showcase artists currently practicing, emerging talents and veteran artists. A wide range of media will be presented, touching on a plethora of themes reflecting the vibrant state of art in Queensland.
Artists on display in GOMA Q will include senior practitioners such as Davida Allen, Ian Friend and Gordon Shepherdson, new media artists Moe Louanjli and Antoinette J Citizen, Indigenous artists Mavis Ngallametta and the late Umpila leader Lawrence Omeenyo and new works from Julie Fragar, Tyza Stewart and Michael Zavros. The opening weekend of the exhibition will boast a smorgasbord of events including panel discussions and guided tours. On July 11 the ‘State of Play’ panel will see a discussion between Jason Smith, Curatorial Manager of Australian Art, Bruce McLean, Associate Curator of Indigenous Australian Art, Justin Bishop, Director of KickArts Contemporary Arts and Sally Butler, Art History lecturer at The University of Queensland. The ‘Emerging Artist Panel Discussion’ will be led by Channon Goodwin, Director of BUS Projects, and will feature artists Clark Beaumont, Sam Cranstoun, Dale Harding, Naomi Hobson and Anita Holtsclaw. July 12 will offer a printmaking workshop for teens and a guided tour of the exhibition by curator Peter McKay.
